Log #2 - Interior and Exterior Cosmetic Diagnosis

Interior Diagnosis and Cosmetic Restoration Preparations

June 14, 2026

Multimedia System

After inspecting the lighting and wiper systems, I decided to move to the interior.

First, I examined the vehicle's multimedia system.

  • The car had a Piranha head unit installed.

Evaluation:

  • The sound quality was weak,
  • The material quality was low,
  • It did not fit the car’s OEM-style interior.

I chose a Pioneer DEH-5250BT as the replacement.

Why I chose it:

  • CD input,
  • Bluetooth support,
  • Separate button and display color adjustment.

The button illumination was set to red, while the display was set to blue to echo the original Volkswagen Gamma and Beta head units.

General Interior Condition

Interior inspection:

  • The soft-touch coatings showed age-related wear.
  • The upholstery had a layer of dirt built up over years of use.
  • The floor coverings needed deep cleaning.

The good part:

  • The interior did not show signs of smoking.
  • There was no yellowing or heavy odor in the upholstery.

Products ordered for cleaning:

  • Valet Pro Classic APC 1 L
  • Divortex Torpido Bakım Sütü 1 L
  • Detailing brush sets
  • Deerma BY200 koltuk ve halı yıkama makinesi

Ashtray and Cigarette Lighter Section

Heavy dust accumulation was observed when inspecting the ashtray and lighter area.

Checks:

  • The cigarette lighter was not working.
  • Since the goal is to leave no dead equipment in the car, I ordered a new cigarette lighter unit.

Dashboard and Trim Noises

The dashboard removal began to determine the source of interior trim noises.

Initial findings:

  • There was a small crack in the upper section.
  • At first, I suspected this area as the source of the trim noise.

During removal with a T15 Torx:

  • The right-side mounting screw was missing.
  • The missing screw was the main source of the trim noise.
  • I found a replacement screw locally.
  • For the small dashboard crack, I decided on epoxy repair instead of replacing the whole dashboard.

Ordered product:

  • Selsil Şırınga Epoksi

Volkswagen technical documents showed that the gear console and handbrake console also need to be removed to take the dashboard out completely.

Because the car is still used regularly, I postponed that job to a later maintenance day.

Wheels and Braking System

The Montreal II wheels were examined in detail.

Checks:

  • There was heavy brake dust and iron fallout buildup.
  • The wheels had several stone chips.
  • I did not find any structural damage.

Products ordered for cleaning:

  • Divortex Demir Tozu Temizleyici
  • Wheel cleaning equipment

The condition of the center caps was also examined.

Measurements:

  • I identified the code 6N0 601 171.
  • The caps measured about 55 mm outside diameter and 50 mm inside diameter.
  • Based on those measurements, I ordered new center caps.

A visual brake inspection did not show structural problems, but the area was heavily dirty.

Therefore:

  • Selsil Balata Spreyi sipariş edildi.

Tires

The tires were new, but the sidewalls were dirty.

Planned steps:

  • Cleaning with APC
  • Tire shine application

Ordered products:

  • Selsil Lastik Parlatıcı
  • Tire applicator sponges

Paint and Exterior Surface

I did not buy a polishing machine because the car’s paint history is unknown.

Until I have proper data about clear coat thickness and paint condition, I will stick to safer cleaning methods.

Ordered products:

  • Divortex Cilalı Oto Şampuanı
  • Drying towel
  • Microfiber cloths

License Plate Holder

The car had a local auto service advertisement plate holder.

I ordered Volkswagen-logo plate holders for a cleaner OEM-style look.

Engine Bay

The engine bay had heavy dust buildup.

For detailed cleaning:

  • Selsil Motor Temizleme Spreyi
  • I ordered fine detailing brushes.

The engine oil dipstick had a broken minimum level marker.

I ordered a replacement dipstick.

Conclusion

By the end of the second day, I had checked the interior, trim pieces, wheels, brake area, and engine bay in detail. I also identified and ordered the equipment needed for cosmetic restoration and deep cleaning.

At this stage, the goal is to preserve the car’s current condition, complete missing parts, and clean years of wear in a controlled way before moving into heavier mechanical work.
