Log #4 - Exterior Improvements and Electrical System Checks

Exterior Improvements and Electrical System Checks

June 17, 2026

Exterior Appearance

After the wheel cleaning on the third day, I continued replacing missing exterior details.

I first installed the Volkswagen-logo plate holders that had arrived earlier.

The old plate holders were not destroyed, but they did not fit the OEM-style look. The new holders made the exterior look cleaner and more complete.

I then installed the Volkswagen center logos ordered for the Montreal II wheels.

After the wheel cleaning, the missing center logos became more obvious. Installing them made the wheels look more complete.

A second check did not show structural damage on the wheels, but brake dust and dirt were still visible in the inner barrels.

I am still waiting for the wheel brush needed for deeper cleaning.

Wiper System

The ordered Bosch Aerotwin wipers arrived, and I installed them.

The old wipers still worked in a basic sense, but their age and condition made replacement the right call.

After installation, I tested the system and did not find any issue.

Electrical System Checks

I carried out several checks to find the cause of the flickering instrument and interior lights during driving.

I removed and inspected the headlight switch.

Checks:

  • There was no visible burn mark or melting around the connector.
  • The headlight leveling system worked.
  • The instrument brightness adjustment behaved irregularly.

When I lowered the brightness, the lights dimmed, but at the lowest position they rose again. That behavior stood out.

I decided to inspect the system in more detail later to find the actual cause.

Cigarette Lighter System

I continued checking the cigarette lighter system that had already been marked as faulty.

The fuse box check showed that the cigarette lighter fuse was intact.

I tested the new lighter mechanism, but I still could not confirm whether the system was working properly.

For that reason, the lighter socket and wiring still need a detailed check.

Conclusion

By the end of the fourth day, the new plate holders, wheel center logos, and Bosch Aerotwin wipers were installed.

I also completed the first diagnostic checks on the interior light flicker and cigarette lighter fault.

The cosmetic restoration is moving forward, but the electrical issues still need proper diagnosis.
